Twig Science Redesign

Twig Science is Imagine Learning's online science platform that teaches the US Next Generation Science Standards curriculum, used by teachers in US schools to present lessons to students. The platform is currently split into two apps - Twig K6 which is used to teach younger Kindergarten to Grade 6 students, and Twig MS which teaches older Middle School students.

After being brought on board to initially create Design System documentation and improve accessibility for the existing platforms, once that was completed the next task was to conduct user research and create new design prototypes to improve usability and customer satisfaction in response to the platform receiving a low CSAT score from users the previous year.

This first involved collecting feedback from teachers via Hotjar, then recruiting participants for user testing and presenting them with a new prototype design based on the newer Twig MS designs. Common feedback on the current platform included it being too confusing, cluttered and difficult to navigate. The new prototype remedied most of these concerns, with streamlined navigation and clearer content presentation, but the Twig MS design style was considered a bit dull and stale too.

Based on the feedback and testing, I went about creating a completely new design concept, that retained much of the existing K6 look and feel yet tried to solve the content presentation issues of the existing K6 platform, whilst borrowing some of the useful elements from the MS platform - such as the improved navigation menu and page structures (using tabs to break up content more instead of long scrolling pages).

In addition to this, with generative AI being all the rage, we wanted to add some useful new GPT powered features to the dashboard, so I designed concepts for these and worked them into the new platform design - such as TwigGPT (an GPT AI powered chat assistance to help teachers discover content) and an AI powered lesson generator that could create customised lessons based on inputs such as topics, teaching time and student ability.
